10. "Little Black Submarines" - The Black Keys

Two feels, two tempos, but seamlessly tied together with simple lyrics. The Black Keys are able to show their Who-esque balladry and still be completely badass with their blues roots.

9. "Settle Down" - Kimbra

The intro is so clever and fun and when Kimbra starts the first verse, her voice is so smooth, it's perfect. The beat sounds open and fresh. Makes me want to name my daughter Nebraska Jones.

8. "Get Some" - Lykke Li

Dirtiest song of 2011. Those tribal drums are sick , but seriously those lyrics....

7. "The Edge of Glory" - Lady Gaga

Lady Gaga's musical ability is overshadowed always, but true to the roots of her stage name, she taps into her classic rock vocal chords and defines pop. Or, what pop should be.

THE ELITE

5. "The Weight of Love" - Snow Patrol

Snow Patrol has really mastered The Build-Up, as evidenced by "The Weight of Love". The chant-like back-up vocals and the wailing guitar that pops up during the chorus is a lovely hearken to Fleetwood make, I think.

4. "Lover to Lover" - Florence + the Machine

Florence Welch's brand of "Chamber Soul" is an exciting ride. Her voice is always nuanced and entertaining, but Florence also has this uncanny ability to go from tremulous and delicate to stormy and powerful at the drop of a hat. This is the most soul-infused track on her album, so it's no mistake it is the one that made this list.

3. "N***as in Paris" - Kanye West and Jay-Z

Kanye and Jay-Z have a tradition of making awesome music. Minimal, but effective background beat (even that dubstep break), but this song is all about the lyrics. "Provocative," yes, and seriously, both Kanye and Jay break it down. Genius.

2. "Call It What You Want" - Foster the People

Mark Foster and his boys have the funnest song in 2011 with "Call It What You Want." Supremely underrated (it was a REALLY good album, so that's somewhat understandable), this song is just amazing. The disco synth rhythm, only, like, two verses of lyrics and the rest is just them rocking out (seriously, the second and last verse ends with ~1:45 left on the track). Also, what an awesome feeling to just sit back and say, I'm gonna do me, have fun and not care what you label it.

1. "Rolling in the Deep" - Adele

While #3 is all about the lyrics and #2 is mostly about the music, #1 really puts them both together. Adele's passion and voice are irresistible. One of the best breakup songs EVER. So often Adele effortlessly belts out insane notes with power, but she never seems to let the animal within out of the cage. There are glimpses of that in this song. The clapping, stomping and background singers are great touches. It was a bit tired due to mainstream radio getting a hold of this track and not letting it go, but you can't deny her this spot.

Confession: I'm pretty excited about these 20 songs...

20. "We Found Love" - Rihanna ft. Calvin Harris

I normally can't stand Rihanna, but the soaring beat sets this one apart. Let's credit Calvin Harris for this one.

19. "Civilization" - Justice

Biblical allusions aside, this French duo tossed out this bombastic single in 2011. Even with all the electronica, nothing ever sounds artificial. Maybe I should explain that more...

18. "Every Teardrop is a Waterfall" - Coldplay

These guys just have the magic touch where everything they touch turns into a stadium anthem. Consists of: hyperbolism, their trademark catchy melody, and Chris Martin's surprisingly strong voice.

17. "Hello" - Martin Solveig ft. Dragonette

Yes, it was featured on its share of commercials this past year, but seriously, they had good reason with this one. Light and happy; like, if I were the dude Dragonette was rejecting, I'd probably still walk away with a smile on my face.

16. "Second Chance" - Peter Bjorn and John

That unified instrumental hit and those oooooo-ooo-ooooo oo-oo's.

15. "Countdown" - Beyoncé

Yeah, the lyrics are a little crazy and dirty, but it's Beyoncé at her best - sans the Major Lazer bloops and beeps. You can't deny that she's a fierce lady.

14. "Heart Attack" - Raphael Saadiq

The running guitars in this one are an excellent start, and then Raphael Saadiq screams his vocal entrance. Not once does it stop to let you catch your breath.

13. "Somebody That I Used to Know" - Gotye ft. Kimbra

The contrasts in this song are incredible. Gotye starts off level headed, and then has an emotional peak. Kimbra starts in, open to explain herself, but she too gets frustrated and sings out. The contrast between their voices and each side of the story is awesome as well. Terrific!

12. "If I Die Young" - The Band Perry

Written from the perspective of a teenager, every thing about this song is touching. The delicate vocal chords strike just the right amount of melancholy and innocence. The chorus makes it sound ceremonial and the rest of the lyrics are strangely personal.

11. "Stare Into the Sun" - Graffiti6

The distorted voices and the and the ting-ing notes are so 2011, but the soul and lyrics "I got a fever baby" are from a different, better decade.

30. "Don't Sit Down 'Cause I've Moved Your Chair" - Arctic Monkeys

This song signifies exactly where the Arctic Monkeys needed to go: a darker, harder route while still maintaining their clever and youthfully rebellious streak. Alex Turner's vocals show real versatility and it's just solid rock.

29. "Bloody Poetry" - Grieves

The imagery in this song is amazing. It's uncommon for me to say this about contemporary lyrics in hip hop songs, but this is beautiful poetry.

28. "Under Cover of Darkness" - The Strokes

It's the same Strokes brand of attitude with the distorted guitar and imperfect Julian Casablancas vocals. Glorious!

27. "Dear Professor" - The Dean's List

I'm always impressed when rappers can think beyond their R&B/Hip Hop box. It's what made Chiddy Bang initially appealing when they used alternative artists like Passion Pit and MGMT, and it's what really impresses me with the Dean's List as they use a country song to inspire this "Go out and Get It" mixtape feature.

26. "Cry Baby" - Lady Linn and Her Magnificent Seven

Lady Linn hails from Belgium with a super smooth, extra classy, jazz voice. Awesome horn line backing her up.

25. "Go!" - Santigold ft. Karen O

Power women with a kick ass beat. People want their power.

24. "Up" - James Morrison ft. Jessie J

James Morrison has the ability to make any duet partner sound fantastic, but Jessie J pulls her own weight. Achingly good lyrics.

23. "Without You" - David Guetta ft. Usher

I love that the lyrical parts of this song match the dance breaks. David Guetta produces the best beat on his album by simply not going over the top.

22. "Need You Now" - Cut Copy

The beat is reminiscent of the eighties and it took me forever, but I finally realized that I hear Pulp ALL during this song.

21. "A Long Time" - Mayer Hawthorne

Mayer Hawthorne's story about Henry Ford and Barry Goldy bringing the Motor City, his hometown, into its Golden Age only to have it fall into this slump. I mean, the 2010 census showed a 25% decrease in population in Detroit since 2000. In any case, the story isn't over, not for Detroit and not for the country. It just might take a long time to get back to where we once were.

Picking up where we left off!

40. "You Make Me Feel..." - Cobra Starship ft. Sabi

Gabe Saporta and Cobra Starship have completed their conversion to all out attention-grabbing dance. Electrified and autotuned chords and chock-full of energy.

39. "CocknBullKid" - CocknBullKid

Anita Blay, who wrote with Plan B as a teen, offers a steady but solid track on her second album. She doesn't wish for a person to want her, she wishes for a person to want to want her. I think it's a great exercise in restraint well-done.

38. "Montreal" - Red Kite

The first and only release from the British band (though no solid plans to release an album in 2012, hence why they are included in this list), "Montreal" admittedly takes a little while to warm up, but by the time you hit the chorus, it's simply unstoppable.

37. "Kmag Yoyo" - Hayes Carll

An awesomely fun blues spoof piece about joining the army, getting "kicked out" for dealing heroin to the Taliban, taking LSD and uppers for government studies, being sent out into space for NORAD and finally getting the fuck out to join the Peace Corps. Good fun!

36. "Party Rock Anthem" - LMFAO ft. Lauren Bennett and GoonRock

Infectious. Simply, from bottom to top including the Shuffling dance.

35. "Stronger" - Kelly Clarkson

Kelly Clarkson knows where her niche is in the music industry; she knows she can make a song about a break up and coming out a stronger, better woman. Guess what this song is about!

34. "Midnight City" - M83

M83, aka Anthony Gonzalez, creates a huge single with "Midnight City". It has this uncanny ability to change the pace of whatever you're doing. As a saxophone player, I'd like to direct your attention to near the end of the song as well...

33. "Cough Syrup" - Young the Giant

Young the Giant is an alternative band that wants to be a rock band. The guitar lines in this are melodic most of the time, but assertive when they have to be. The vocals are always genuine and you never feel overwhelmed by the drums.

32. "Up Up Up" - GIVERS

The rhythmic hook in this disgustingly happy track is everywhere. The female and male voices blend with and distinguish from each other perfectly.

31. "Dance With the Devil" - The Sounds

The Sounds were awesome in 2011, but they were the best in "Dance With the Devil". The band is tight and Maja Ivarsson is Un. Stoppable. They seriously could conquer the planet with this one.

Best of 2011: Songs #50-41

OK, those are boring. The following songs are not:

50. "Perth" - Bon Iver

It's true: I don't always appreciate Justin Vernon's soulful falsetto. I like it when vocals are strong and assertively make statements. However, in "Perth" the vocals are set against a full snare line and a beautifully layered orchestra in a way that the at-times-timid voice is juxtaposed with the strong musical swell perfectly. A really pretty song.

49. "Sydney (I'll Come Running)" - Brett Dennen

Brett Dennen preceded his 2011 release with an upbeat single in the form of "Sydney". Surprisingly, it lacks his usual socially-conscious lyrics, but it is no less fun.

48. "Mama's Broken Heart" - Miranda Lambert

Lambert keeps with her Angry-Ex persona on this track. She sings with so much ferocity her band can barely keep up. Things really go down when the Baptists hear your gossip.

47. "Words I Never Said" - Lupe Fiasco ft. Skylar Grey

Lupe sticks with his bold politics and blows up the bass here. I never worshiped Skylar Grey as a vocalist, because I seriously doubt her versatility but in the case of this one song, she really sets the tone. Bonus points for calling out Glenn Beck.

46. "Price Tag" - Jessie J ft. B.o.B

Speaking of well-matched duos. This song lit up the summer of 2011 and just wouldn't quit. It's a great sentiment and one we can especially be drawn to during the economic slump. The guitar sounds like really slow funk and Jessie J's vocals sound like a British Gwen Stefani - she belongs in front of a reggae band, but she's got the grit to be pursuing the pop career she is.

45. "Greed" - Patrick Stump

His album was called Soul Punk and this was the perfect embodiment of that. Stump's vocals, in my opinion, have never really been given the praise it deserves. His passion is really fun to listen to, and the rhythmic claps and clicks don't hurt the drive of his song about crooked human beings.

44. "I Want My Mojo Back" - Scott H. Biram

Grungy Bluesman, Scott H. Biram, growls his way through the traditional blues chord progression in this track. Live bootleg versions of Biram playing this on his own (percussion, low guitar, lead and back up vocals) are really great, but the saxophone is a monster in this studio version.

43. "Sun of a Gun" - Oh Land

Oh Land has a lovely voice, so she doesn't need over the top beats to make a great dance song.

42. "Rope" - Foo Fighters

Dave Grohl and his crew keep us hanging on to what rock and roll is really about: Attacking vocals, animalistic drumming and a badass guitar.

41. "Two Against One" - Danger Mouse and Daniele Luppi ft. Jack White

It's fitting that this song sounds like it was recorded in an open auditorium with Jack White standing in the middle alone. A really well-composed track from the bass to the background vocals to the guitar solo.

Best of 2011: Superlatives Pt. 1

It's that time of year again! You know, that month when I suddenly remember I have a music blog and then post a flood of really awesome stuff.

Let's review the rules for my Best Of lists!

1. Songs will not be repeated on lists. For example, if a song is listed under best remix here in the Superlatives post, they will not appear on the list for Best Songs.

2. If an artist releases an EP and a full-length album in the same year, only the full-length album will be considered. For instance, Foster the People released their sef-titled EP in January 2011 and then their full-length Torches in May. For this reason, the EP will not be considered for the Best EP category.

3. Artists only get one song per category, including Best Songs.

4. For the Songs list, only those that are released on an album in 2011 are considered. Take fun.'s new single "We Are Young" for example: the song itself was released in 2011, but it won't be released on a full album until 2012, so it will be considered for next year's zeitgeist.

2011 Superlatives

Best Mixtape - Peanut Butter and Swelly - Chiddy BangThis duo is ridiculously prolific. Xaphoon Jones has yet to run out of clever beats and Chiddy keeps it coming with his playful lyrics. It's just fun. Also, extra points for freestyling to Flux Pavillion's "I Can't Stop" before Kanye and Jay-Z.

"Heatwave" - Chiddy Bang ft. Mac Miller, Casey Veggies and Trae Tha Truth

Best EP - Dispatch EP - DispatchAfter more than a year away from the studio, the folk trio is back with a new zest. It's edgier, but undeniably Dispatch.

"Broken American" - Dispatch

Best Mash-Up - "Crazy in the Deep" - Divide & KreateJust the idea to put Gnarls Barkley's (I always just want to say "Cee-Lo") "Crazy" and Adele's "Rolling in the Deep" together is a really great catch, but this mash-up brings new color to already fantastic songs. It should be said that there were very few Adele mash-ups and remixes that I hated in 2011.

"Crazy in the Deep" - Divide & Kreate (Adele vs. Gnarls Barkley)

Best Remix - "Walking Away (Cosmonaut Grechko Remix)" - Druma KinaRussian Cosmonaut Grehko takes Brazilian Druma Kina's funky ditty and transforms it into this seriously smooth track. There was a lot of competition for this category, but this is a deserved title. (BTW, you can get Druma Kina's EP for free at this page. :) )

Cover Music - James Vincent McMorrow

Irish indie artist James Vincent McMorrow experienced modest notoriety with the 2010 release of his first full length album Early in the Morning (which is great - I think I like it more than the comparable 2011 Bon Iver).

Check out his beautifully mellow cover of Steve Winwood's "Higher Love".

New Track: Foster the People

Yes, yes, yes. Everyone is still drooling over Foster the People's May release of Torches, and it definitely deserves props, but I think it's time to shift a little attention to FtP's new stuff. Like "Love".

The best way to describe this song and WHY I love it is by comparing it to songs from the masterpiece album, Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band.

The song is typical FtP in its catchy melodies and lyrics, but also in that there's this overall creepy undercurrent. Think about it - how many times did you listen to "Pumped Up Kicks" before you realized it was a commentary on gun violence? Sgt. Pepper's is that way too. Everything seems so whimsical and happy, but at the same time, the entire album it feels like bad news is approaching. For me, the closest parallel is "Being for the Benefit of Mr. Kite".

The first similarity you'll notice when listening is the jaunty boom-tsssh line from the drumset in "Mr. Kite" and the synth (probably) in "Love". These beats shape each song.

The second thing that tugged on my ear was the echo-quality to the word "Love" in the chorus. Doesn't it sound eerily similar to the line "I'd love to turn you on" from the Sgt's Pepper's closing song "A Day in the Life"? Pardon me if I'm wrong, but I believe they also hit the same notes: "turn you on" and "love love love".

Lastly, Mark Foster's vocals stylings (not the timbre as much) are reminiscent of Paul McCartney: "I've got the fever/Got the fever/Got the fever yeah".

Generally, if a band reminds me of the Beatles at all, that's a good sign, and "Love" is no exception.

Adele Covers: Linkin Park and Jeremih

Anyone else sick of Adele covers and remixes yet? See, I thought I was too. Until I saw the names Linkin Park and Jeremih.

Linkin Park try their hand at "Rolling in the Deep" in front of their audience at the iTunes Festival in London on July 4th. The song is a gentle reminder that Chester can approach a song's vocals with sensitivity. Other than that, they didn't stray far from the original.

Jeremih recently sat down with Billboard.com and performed his rendition of "Rumour Has It" while playing the drums and keyboard. Watch out for the cut to "Ice Ice Baby," "Under Pressure" and then his own single "Down On Me" towards the end there.

New Artist: Selah Sue

I first came across Selah Sue's name while listening to Cee-Lo Green's 2010 release The Lady Killer. Her feature on the song "Please" exhibit her passion for soul music and her vocal power that belie her 20 years. As of right now, Selah Sue only has an EP release (Raggamuffin) here in the states though you can find her self-titled full length if you look hard enough. Her own style on the album reflects more folk and reggae influences.

Ok, 3 additional things:

1. She's not just a vocalist - she performs with the guitar as well
2. She's from Belgium - apparently they have a burgeoning rock scene.
3. She performed at the iTunes Festival a few days ago and the video is available to watch for free in the iTunes store (along with Raphael Saadiq's, Jimmy Eat World, and Arctic Monkey's set).

I'm currently digging "Beacon," this cheery tune from Matt Duncan's 2010 EP release of the same name. As for his whole sound, think folksy, brassy, and sometimes hollow (like Jens Lekman). This song has got that sunny-sunday-morning, frisbee-in-the-park kind of feel. Give it a try!

In their first new release since 1999, Dispatch retain their musical wisdom and stick to their folk instinct. They're still singing about the same big issues, but nothing sounds tired. Dispatch EP is a fantastic disc. While I was disappointed with the lack of rap on the EP, they're still my favorite flavor of jam band.

The "other" French electro power duo are finally back (wow, Daft Punk much?) with their best hit yet. Energizing and BIG are probably the two best words for "Civilization." It makes me think of an ancient Aztec sacrifice scene because the sound and lyrics are so primal but it's juxtaposed by the clear, clean electro effects. Look out for it on the best of 2011 list!

Arcade Fire has always been dramatic, even when you just consider the twenty-some instruments they play. Each and every track of The Suburbs is a grand theatrical experiment. Each song vastly different from the next. Some are written from the teenage soul, some from the middle-age, and all written with trembling respect for the integrity of music itself.

That's not to say that she is in any way disingenuous, on the contrary, but it does mean that this deserves several listens, and earns a spot on the Top 20.

17. Sir Lucious Leftfoot: Son of Chico Dusty - Big Boi

Big Boi made his understated return with Lucious Leftfoot in July of 2010 after disputes with his ex-label, Jive. The innovative sounds on the album are awesome, but of course, the best part is Big Boi's lyricism.

16. Kaleidoscope - Sara Bareilles

This album has perhaps the greatest opener and closer pair of any other album on this list. Obviously that's not the only reason this album is on this list, but her talents that are featured on both are. Both showcase her voice and simple, but beautiful writing. That fact that it's good pop is a happy coincidence.

15. Business Casual - Chromeo

The Chromeo duo put out their third and best LP in 2010. They artfully manage synth beats and the talk box into an electrofunk club beast. It's the soundtrack to the Saturday night full of dancing, club-hopping and seduction.

14. The Sea - Corinne Bailey Rae

The Sea was a really important LP in Corinne Bailey Rae's career. Written while she was coming terms with her husband's accidental overdose. It's the same voice from "Put Your Records On," but you can feel the pain and the strength.

13. Volume Two - She & Him

After they generated so many expectations with Volume One, this perfectly balanced group rose to the occasion and put out this sunny, summery album. They're folksy in their ability to tell stories, funky with his guitar and bluesy with her vocals - and then they blur the lines.

Sure, all he talks about is weed, but he's still got that appeal that reaches beyond just stoners. The ethereal beats and his sarcasm are easy to chill out with.

I always forget that Grey's Anatomy picks really good music. That is, until I "discover" (or rediscover, as I did in this case) a song/artist I love and find out they had songs on the show.

It's really difficult to describe William Fitzsimmons because everything is multifaceted.

His style is similar to Iron and Wine (with the beard) but he's not afraid to mix his mellow folk tunes up with electronic effects. He plays several instruments which he picked up from his blind parents. His soft voice and melodies make it easy to believe his day job as a therapist.

"So This is Goodbye" was released on his most recent album Derivatives (2010). On the same album, Fitzsimmons also included the Pink Ganter remix of the same song. Both are beautiful.

Confession: I kind of really like the new Maine single "Inside of You." It gives me hope for their new album. With a band like the Maine you can make one of two mistakes with a sophomore album:

1. You can write the same catchy, shallow, probably immature (but still fun) crap as what was on your first album. It's not as awesome the second time around. Take, for instance Boys Like Girls and 2009's Love Drunk - not as awesome by a long shot.

2. You can take a risk and reinvent your sound only to end up with something... well, not fantastic. There may always be those hardcore fans a band may maintain, and they may gain respect for taking a risk and flexing some musical creative muscle, but in all honesty if it sucks, the "new" and "maintained" fans won't make much of a difference. For example, consider MGMT, and their (new-ish) sophomore album Congratulations.

THAT SAID, this new single assures me that the Maine boys won't make either of these mistakes!

When I stay awake all night, whether it's due to studying or less stressful activities, I always get this wave of energy at sunrise. Even after four years of waking up in the 5 o'clock hour, I have not adopted a morning-person nature. With his 2009 release of Sunny Side Up, it seems likely that Paolo Nutini has adopted that nature.

This Paolo Nutini tune isn't about all-nighters, but that won't keep me from blasting it when I get that bubble of excitement at sunrise. True to his jazzy roots, Nutini is soft and smooth for a good chunk of the song, but in the latter half, the style changes and the horns back him up along with a driving snare and it's a perfect end to the song.

In watching the above music video, I felt like elements of it were very similar to V.V. Brown's "Shark in the Water" video.

Bad boy Ben Drew is a British rapper with a 2006 LP under his belt. In the past he's collaborated with Chase and Status (an intense music video for End Credits [with Michael Caine!] is posted below) and played up the hip-hop side of his creativity.

I never thought I'd post anything about Fever Ray. I can't get into her music and if I ever did, I imagine I'd experience some pretty gruesome nightmares. Yeah, her music is THAT scary.

In any case, it's a good thing this post isn't about anyone's music!

Ok, so a little background: Karin Dreijer Andersson is a Swedish artist, formerly from the band Knife, who became quite popular with several indie music blogs in 2009. See here and here. (BTW I recommend neither of these blogs, partly because they love Fever Ray). If you really really really want to hear her music, go here, but again I am making no recommendation. In any case, she was recently honored at the Swedish P3 Gold Awards for 2009's Best Dance Artist. Watch the video to see what she showed up in and what she did.

It's one of those collaborations you would never have thought of before it happens, but when it does you think, "Well, duh!" It's a great song to begin with, but it helps that both Jay and Alicia are at the top of their game.

9. "Crystal Vases" - The Early Hours

This song was released on one of the best EPs of the year and it really is a cute but depressing song about a guy whose only friend is the maid. Who cleans up the crystal vase when he smokes two packs a day. Believe it or not, these are very similar to the actual lyrics!

8. "Bad Romance" - Lady Gaga

Lady Gaga has this sense of style that is applicable in all areas of a performance. From costume to lyrics to delivery everything is meticulously put together, and that's why "Bad Romance" is awesome. Yes, it's overtly sexual and yes the girl is OUT THERE, but everything is deliberate. It's SUPER catchy, but never cheesy and always interesting.

7. "The Cave" - Mumford & Sons

This song took a little while for me to get used to, but once I did it hit me hard. The intro is sweet, the lyrics are way awesome and it's just an all around sweet song. I typically don't enjoy banjos, but this song is a lovely exception.

6. "Drumming Song" - Florence + the Machine

It's the theatrical feeling to this song that makes everything about it fantastic. The character is introduced, the problem outlined and the tension builds. It's BIG and dirty, but feminine. It's an overture and the leading lady sings with such intense emotion you feel it in your blood and your heart begins to match the rhythm.

5. "When Love Takes Over" - David Guetta ft. Kelly Rowland

Kelly Rowland is the perfect touch to David Guetta's genius beats. Guetta puts together a song that's not just meant to be played in dance halls, but can be blasted in cars or during runs or anywhere. She hits every single note (even in those sick scales) effortlessly and beautifully. Such a breathtaking love song.

4. "1901" - Phoenix

Who would have thought a song about Paris in 1901 would be so awesome?! It's not just the song, it's the FEEL of it. The springy guitar, the electrifying bass, and the spot-on singing. It creates a fresh atmosphere and it's so original and fun.

3. "Chelsea" - The Summer Set

Drinks are pouring and girls are fine in Arizona circa 2005, and Brian Dales tells the story of him and his current girlfriend, Chelsea Stuab (from this show) and the group clicks everything into place. Once again, I heart Jess Bowen, the drummer and only girl in the band; she runs a tight set. This is pop rock at it's best.

20. "Deep South" - Cartel

A song about just wanting to be home and having pride about where you come from. Given that these guys are from the Bible Belt, I have to wonder if some of the lyrics allude to God. A powerful chorus and style unlike what we've previously seen from Cartel.

19. "Teach Me How to Jerk" - Audio Push

This is probably the best beat put together in 2009, and I sincerely hope these young guys have more up their sleeve. They dance, they mix and they sing and they rap. And they've a great sense of humor.

18. "My Life Would Suck Without You" - Kelly Clarkson

I'll admit it: I judged this song based on its title before I heard it. While I still think it's a dumb title, it's a testament to the fact that a great, versatile voice never goes out of fashion.

17. "Happy" - Leona Lewis

Speaking of an amazing voice, does this girl have PIPES or what? A beautiful and heart-wrenching piece. My favorite part is the huge hit "So what if it hurts me..."! Oh yeah, that one gives me goosebumps.

16. "Weightless" - All Time Low

All Time Low ruled punk-pop in 2009 and it was well deserved, even if just for this song. The #1 optimistic song of the year.

This song is the dance party mix essential. The funky horn line keeps the beat up and Pixie's energy drives it. Is it just me or does she sound like Christina Aguilera at some points?

14. "Two Left Feet" - Anya Marina

Most of Anya's stuff has some sexual undertones, but this one is just so playful. The song starts off by introducing the four important music elements: the clapping-like rhythm, the tambourine, the bass, and her voice. The way each of these fit together makes for a really interesting sound even if it does sound eerily like Bloc Party's "The Prayer".

13. "Marchin On" - OneRepublic

It's the same cold OneRepublic vibe, but the back up vocals have the sickest lick in the entire song and warm your fingers and toes just the tiniest bit. A truly beautiful song "for those days we felt like a mistake."

12. "Pull My Heart Away" - Jack Peñate

The beautiful sound of the guitar nails the mood Jack's lyrics set up. Going 180 from his last album, Peñate let his voice drive the songs rather than the guitar and it paid off.

11. "Shark in the Water" - V.V. Brown

Ok, I'll admit it, this is my song of the moment (along with Plan B's "Stay Too Long"), but c'mon this is such an amazing song. The swooning back up vocals, the quick strums of the clean and clear guitar and the powerful voice of Ms. Brown is a genre mash-up. And a very successful one at that.

Ok, same rules as last time, but just to reiterate:

1. This list will only include songs that were released in 2009.

2. I deliberately only chose one song per artist.

3. This list has gone through several drafts. The songs you see really have passed the test, however if you don't agree with something, drop a line in the comments box. I'd love to discuss it with you.

Also, I can't get enough of this song. The most awesome mix of soul and rap (by the same guy) ever, and none of you will believe me until you actually hear it. So go actually hear it.

And now, ladies and gentlemen, Numbers 40 through 31:

40. "Man of the Hour" - Norah Jones

An absolutely adorable riddle in song form. Norah Jones describes this sweet, meat-eating man that she's chosen because he's not a "vegan or a pot head." It's her dog of course, and the bark at the very end of this song (also the very end of her album The Fall as this is the closing song) is the perfect touch to this simple song that only Norah Jones and her beautiful voice could convey.

39. "Tell Me I'm a Wreck" - Every Avenue

This song is a wonderful example of this band. Not as quirky and clever as a lot of their stuff on their first album, Shh. Just Go With It, "Tell Me I'm a Wreck" is a song with a simple formula and great vocals.

38. "Always Like This" - Bombay Bicycle Club

The bass line alone is a fantastic lick, and everything else is beautifully controlled. The lead singer, Jack Steadman, gets points for playing the xylophone. Great song from this band's first album.

37. "Mountain & the Sea" - Ingrid Michaelson

The first lines of this song, "You called me a mountain/and I called you the sea," set the tone for the entire song. The metaphor is both sweet and dynamic with the obligatory ukulele strumming and happy clapping rhythms.

36. "Time For Me" - Holiday Parade

There is an upside to breaking up! Holiday Parade put out a really great album this year, one punk-pop fans can be proud of, and this song is particularly catchy. The chorus is a completely different tone than the rest of the song, but then again it's all about being resolute in finishing a relationship.

35. "Teenagers" - Hayley Williams

While I'm not a HUGE fan of Hayley Williams' voice on a lot of her stuff with Paramore, this sounds kind of awesome.

The first few lines of this classic Franz Ferdinand song are priceless. 5. One Love - David Guetta

David Guetta is a genius at a turn table. This album is particularly monumental because as a French DJ producing music that has never been popular in the United States, David Guetta broke through. Not to mention he's wracked up 4 Grammy nominations for "When Love Takes Over."

15. Man on the Moon - KiD CuDi

"Day N Nite" was a fantastic single to get the world hyped up about new-to-the-scene KiD CuDi. Unfortunately it did nothing to foretell the clever story that is Man on the Moon. Definitely worth the listen and definitely one of those albums you have to listen to in its entirety and in order.

7. Picture Perfect - Every Avenue

5. Extra Cheese - Ryan Adams

Nicknamed "The Valentine EP" because (a) it was released on Valentine's Day and (b) this was right before Adams tied the knot with Mandy Moore, so yes, there's some mushy content. But, surprisingly, it's also a LOT more intense than your average Ryan Adams. With 7 tracks, it probably qualifies as a mini-LP, and I'll be honest, Adams' announcement that he's taking an indefinite hiatus from music immediately after releasing Extra Cheese does make it a little more special. Eric James, the frontman of The Early Hours, makes really good music, with whatever band he forms. So, when I found out Eric James and the New Century broke up, I was at least relieved to find out he's still playing. This is the group's first release, and I hope there are many more to come.

I had the pleasure of seeing Hit the Lights live this year, and they put on a really great show. Their EP, Coast to Coast is packed with fantastic songs and embodies what I love best about this band.

Another first-release for a band, and this is BIG. U.S. Royalty has the look of a stereotypical indie-folk band, but they produce some solid pop songs. Definitely give these guys a listen

The Cab is known to make really catchy pop songs, and I continue to support and love them because they're good AND because they still aren't getting the attention they deserve. The boys have been touring all year and I also got to see them in 2009 with the Maine and We the Kings. And don't get me wrong, We the Kings is a great band, but the Maine and the Cab stole the show. Let's hope 2010 has a full LP from the Cab in store for us!

Gabriel Ríos is one hell of a package. A Puerto Rican singer-songwriter living in Belgium and married to a Belgian supermodel is hard to beat. Especially when he makes songs like "Broad Daylight." We're currently waiting for his 3rd album.

Ok, ok, I know the Jerk has been around awhile, but perhaps these guys will push the movement a little further.

Audio Push, as this emcee duo (Oktane and Price Tag) call themselves, put together an exciting, danceable track in "Teach me How to Jerk". They're about to hit big, and the best part is, they don't need a high profile name to co-sign. I sense a Soulja Boy-esque YouTube phenomenon in the making with this video:

You'll Have to Pull My Heart Away from Jack Peñate

I love any guy who can mix soul, rock, pop well AND can play the guitar with his own hands.

Jack Peñate, the 25 year old Londoner who released his second LP in August, has proven that he can make a guitar driven album in 2007's Matinee whose songs he wrote when he was 19-20 years old. Now, with his most recent album Everything is New, Peñate has proven he can make a musically well-rounded album too. With a few synth beats (I should emphasize that he doesn't overdo it), some emotionally gripping songs and a great, mature voice Jack Peñate has produced a 9-track novel of an album, with a really great story. NME Magazine recently said, "He used to sound like the past, now he sounds like the future."

Personally, I'm looking forward to more collaborations with Jack and his best buddy Adele (she's featured in "My Yvonne" on his first album and "Every Glance" on the new album).

Plus, who can resist those eyes on the cover of Everything is New!

Two fun facts before I get to the actual song:

1. His full name is Jack Fabian Cassius Bethany Louise Peñate. Yeah, Bethany Louise.

2. There's a traditional stage invasion at his gigs for the song "Torn on the Platform". During one such event, his distortion pedal was stolen. His reaction? “D’you know what? Whoever’s got it…keep it! Just make sure you play a Telecaster through it and not a Gibson!”.

Cartel Impress

Cartel's new third album Cycles is good, and while the first single is "Let's Go," there are some other really great tracks. I've this particular one on repeat. "Deep South" is a hard hitting force with some really sweet lyrics. The band itself is from a small town in Georgia (Conyers), and the lyrics allude to it. I don't usually do this, but I'm going to post the lyrics. Read them, give it a listen and you'll find it's a lot deeper than typical Cartel, but definitely one of the best.

I can't describe how much I love pop-folk artist Sean Fournier, and the more I learn the more I love. Shall I count the ways I love thee?

1.) He has truly awesome music sensibility. From his voice to his lyrics to the guitar and piano. Folksy yet fun, acoustic with the perfect amount of electronic manipulation, heartfelt, but never cheesy.

2.) His compilation project in which he encourages fans to cover his music to be featured in his compilation CD. Such an awesome idea.

3.) He's not only a musical artist, but an artist in all regards. Each of the covers for his four albums are original Sean Fournier pieces. And I have to say, they're way cool. He even drew the animations for one of his music videos!

4.) He's unsigned and already has a massive following. Take that Drake, Mr. Understand-Nothing-Was-Done-For-Me. :P

5.) HIS FREE EP. Both because it's free and because it's 6 fantastic songs. I strongly encourage you to spread the word here!

6.) And of course, according to a Creative Uncommons interview we should be keeping an eye out for a new SF Album in early 2010!

The only downside to this amazing artist is that he's taken :(.

Unlike some artsists whom I thought had more self respect (Death Cab, The Killers, Bon Iver, Thom Yorke...), these are the only two artists who turned down an opportunity to have a song on the new Twight soundtrack, according to Rolling Stone (according to the film's director, Chris Weitz).

I can't explain how bummed I am. I feel like these guys sold out to a group of people who don't deserve to hear their music because they don't try hard enough to find it. Boo.

But then, I suppose for some bands it's a great opportunity. All the more reason why Kings of Leon and Arcade Fire deserve some props. Kudos to you.

New Folk: Devendra Banhart

Absolutely beautiful songs have been released by Devendra Banhart recently on his EP Baby. The man, by all accounts, is a mad genius. Never constrained by any one genre, but typically classified as indie/folk/blues, Devendra is teaming up with Wu-Tang Clan's GZA on his new album What Will We Be out Oct. 27. Talk about another unthinkable collaboration.

But in all seriousness, this song, "Goin Back," is a really, really fantastic folk song.
