The Strokes frontman came out with a successful solo album this year and the lead single off Phrazes for the Young, "11th Dimension" comes with a killer and entertaining video. Talk about a smorgasbord of allusions and nods to classic icons. That Julian Casablancas -- he's all right.
"Forgive them, even if they are not sorry" - J.C. (haha)
"11th Dimension" - Julian Casablancas
P.S. 2009 Best Ofs and Superlatives are in the works.
THE BEST CHRISTMAS CAROL EVER "Carol of the Bells" - Vienna Choir Boys (By no means the Best/Only version [i have 7 version of this song in my library])
The Rocket Summer, comprised of just Bryce Avary who plays every instrument, couldn't be doing better. The festival junkie is done for 2009, but will be starting up again in 2010 with buddies from the Warped Tour. Maybe SXSW is in the plans for 2010 as well? Here's hoping. Bryce recently released
I always get excited when movie trailers feature good songs. And this one is just so fitting! Snow Patrol's "Just Say Yes" for a movie about a girl going to Ireland to find her boyfriend so she can propose?! Also, I sort of, kind of like Amy Adams.
Here's the trailer for leap year:
Which features the single "Just Say Yes" from Snow Patrol:
Ok, ok, I know the Jerk has been around awhile, but perhaps these guys will push the movement a little further.
Audio Push, as this emcee duo (Oktane and Price Tag) call themselves, put together an exciting, danceable track in "Teach me How to Jerk". They're about to hit big, and the best part is, they don't need a high profile name to co-sign. I sense a Soulja Boy-esque YouTube phenomenon in the making with this video:
And here's the official music video, which is a lot of fun:
Check out their Twitter for links to free downloads too!
For now, here's the audio for "Teach Me How to Jerk" by Audio Push
I love any guy who can mix soul, rock, pop well AND can play the guitar with his own hands.
Jack Peñate, the 25 year old Londoner who released his second LP in August, has proven that he can make a guitar driven album in 2007's Matinee whose songs he wrote when he was 19-20 years old. Now, with his most recent album Everything is New, Peñate has proven he can make a musically well-rounded album too. With a few synth beats (I should emphasize that he doesn't overdo it), some emotionally gripping songs and a great, mature voice Jack Peñate has produced a 9-track novel of an album, with a really great story. NME Magazine recently said, "He used to sound like the past, now he sounds like the future."
Personally, I'm looking forward to more collaborations with Jack and his best buddy Adele (she's featured in "My Yvonne" on his first album and "Every Glance" on the new album).
Plus, who can resist those eyes on the cover of Everything is New!
Two fun facts before I get to the actual song:
1. His full name is Jack Fabian Cassius Bethany Louise Peñate. Yeah, Bethany Louise.
2. There's a traditional stage invasion at his gigs for the song "Torn on the Platform". During one such event, his distortion pedal was stolen. His reaction? “D’you know what? Whoever’s got it…keep it! Just make sure you play a Telecaster through it and not a Gibson!”.
Now for the song!
"Pull My Heart Away" - Jack Peñate from his second album Everything is New
P.S. He's got a pretty entertaining Twitter. Apparently he loses his wallet a lot.
Tyler Kyte's got this rough, sexy voice, but he's not the macho type. Kyte's a talented guitarist and quite awhile ago gained modest recognition for acting in Are You Afraid of the Dark and Goosebumps.
Also, he volunteers and donates to charities for people with special needs! Go Tyler!
Cartel's new third album Cycles is good, and while the first single is "Let's Go," there are some other really great tracks. I've this particular one on repeat. "Deep South" is a hard hitting force with some really sweet lyrics. The band itself is from a small town in Georgia (Conyers), and the lyrics allude to it. I don't usually do this, but I'm going to post the lyrics. Read them, give it a listen and you'll find it's a lot deeper than typical Cartel, but definitely one of the best.
"Deep South" - Cartel
"I was born in the south Given to a town raised on hand to mouth Born on the same day as the sun Holding in the Earth's seed one by one
I died in the cold and waited to rot Frozen like stone, all is for naught All that I am is churning inside All that I am is screaming...
Go and get my bones Bring 'em to the deep south Oh yeah somewhere they can thaw out Here in the deep south Go and get my bones Bring 'em to the deep south Oh yeah somewhere they can thaw out Here in the deep south
I feel it in my skin Coming undone again and again Torn at the seam my heart had sown Holding back the tears shed on my own
If dying is bold, then courage I've got I could grow old, but I forgot All that I am is churning inside The voice in my head is screaming...
Go and get my bones Bring 'em to the deep south Oh yeah somewhere they can thaw out Here in the deep south Go and get my bones Bring 'em to the deep south Oh yeah somewhere they can thaw out Here in the deep south
I was born in the south Given to a town raised on hand to mouth Born on the same day as the sun Counting every heart beat one by one
Go and get my bones Bring 'em to the deep south Oh yeah somewhere they can thaw out Here in the deep south Go and get my bones Bring 'em to the deep south Oh yeah somewhere they can thaw out Here in the deep south
Go and get my bones Bring 'em to the deep south Oh yeah somewhere they can thaw out Here in the deep south Go and get my bones Bring 'em to the deep south Oh yeah somewhere they can thaw out Here in the deep south"
BONUS: "Lose It" - Cartel (from their second album entitled Cartel)
I can't describe how much I love pop-folk artist Sean Fournier, and the more I learn the more I love. Shall I count the ways I love thee?
1.) He has truly awesome music sensibility. From his voice to his lyrics to the guitar and piano. Folksy yet fun, acoustic with the perfect amount of electronic manipulation, heartfelt, but never cheesy.
2.) His compilation project in which he encourages fans to cover his music to be featured in his compilation CD. Such an awesome idea.
3.) He's not only a musical artist, but an artist in all regards. Each of the covers for his four albums are original Sean Fournier pieces. And I have to say, they're way cool. He even drew the animations for one of his music videos!
4.) He's unsigned and already has a massive following. Take that Drake, Mr. Understand-Nothing-Was-Done-For-Me. :P
5.) HIS FREE EP. Both because it's free and because it's 6 fantastic songs. I strongly encourage you to spread the word here!
6.) And of course, according to a Creative Uncommons interview we should be keeping an eye out for a new SF Album in early 2010!
The only downside to this amazing artist is that he's taken :(.
Jared Leto's band has cut a new album. This is War has potential and will definitely satisfy previous 30STM fans. There's even a Kanye feature. Some of the songs are a little self-indulgent and ridiculously long, but most make up for it.
Case in Point: "Kings & Queens" - 30 Seconds to Mars
On his album All or Nothing, which released earlier this week, Jay Sean includes two versions of "Down". We've all heard the original (or at least the radio edit of the original), but in the Candle Light Remix, the song is transformed into a ballad where Sean demonstrates his talent as a singer. Delightfully surprised.
The follow up single to "Whatcha Say" is out. I LOVE "Hide and Seek" and I can appreciate what Jason did with it, but there's something to be said about a song that's original, free of sampling. This one's definitely got more of a rock feel to it. I like.
Snow Patrol's heart wrenching writing met Leona Lewis' well-known singing passion for the first time in BBC's Live Lounge last October. I was feeling nostalgic. Enjoy.
This is more of a follow up post to something I mentioned a while back about Weezer and Weezy teaming up for a song on Weezer's new album Raditude. The album is closer in style to The Red Album, the last one they released than any other albums of theirs.
Personally, I think the song that features Lil' Wayne stinks, but give it a listen:
"Can't Stop Partying" - Weezer ft. Lil' Wayne
Easily my favorite song on the album, is a cutesy-awkward-teen-moment-in-song. It's also the first single off Raditude. Am I the only one that weirds out when I realize Rivers Cuomo has a KID!?
"(If You're Wondering If I Want You To) I Want You To" - Weezer
In case you missed the buzz a couple of weeks ago, "Video Phone" from Beyonce's I Am...Sasha Fierce (yes, they're still pulling singles off the 2008 album) is being revamped to fit in none other than Lady Gaga. Be on the lookout for a "Video Phone" music video. I'm ready for the two of them to tear it up. I only have the original version of the song, but keep an eye out for the remix (in which Lady Gaga and Beyonce trade verses).
"Video Phone" - Beyonce
It personally comes as no surprise that Beyonce returned the favor with an appearance in Lady Gaga's new song "Telephone."
"Telephone" - Lady Gaga ft. Beyonce
Have a preference?
UPDATE:
Got the Remix Version of "Video Phone" with Lady Gaga:
The boys from Melbourne have decided to call it quits after 16 years of funny, cutesy, and sometimes heartfelt twee pop. If I go into how amazing these boys are, I won't be able to stop, and besides, why tell you what they sound like, when you can find out for yourself. :)
Finally, after the worst losing streak in 22 years, Fernando Torres returns to the Liverpool Kop and scores the first of two goals against a shut out Manchester United!
Highlights: Liverpool vs. Manchester United (2-0) 10.25.09
Officially, Hellogoodbye hasn't released a full length LP since their smashing debut Zombies! Aliens! Vampires! Dinosaurs!. And, officially, Hellogoodbye hasn't produced the same magic since. Their new EP When We First Met, however gives us some hope.
Better still, if you like the following title song, the entire EP, plus a music video is free from the Hellogoodbye boys themselves, in exchange for a subscription to their newsletters (and if that's really too terrible for you to endure, you can unsubscribe whenever). See their website
I've been doing a bit of cleaning in my iTunes library because I officially have too many songs. Not a fun task, but the upside (besides having more space on the computer) is finding some of those songs I haven't listened to in a really long time. Including this fun cover!
"Baby Got Back" - Jonathan Coulton (Sir-Mix-a-Lot cover)
Unlike some artsists whom I thought had more self respect (Death Cab, The Killers, Bon Iver, Thom Yorke...), these are the only two artists who turned down an opportunity to have a song on the new Twight soundtrack, according to Rolling Stone (according to the film's director, Chris Weitz).
I can't explain how bummed I am. I feel like these guys sold out to a group of people who don't deserve to hear their music because they don't try hard enough to find it. Boo.
But then, I suppose for some bands it's a great opportunity. All the more reason why Kings of Leon and Arcade Fire deserve some props. Kudos to you.
Absolutely beautiful songs have been released by Devendra Banhart recently on his EP Baby. The man, by all accounts, is a mad genius. Never constrained by any one genre, but typically classified as indie/folk/blues, Devendra is teaming up with Wu-Tang Clan's GZA on his new album What Will We Be out Oct. 27. Talk about another unthinkable collaboration.
But in all seriousness, this song, "Goin Back," is a really, really fantastic folk song.
Yes Doc, you make perfect sense. Because you CAN cure chronic depression with one visit to the emergency room. I'm so glad they taught you compassion in medical school too.
I love this boy. There's something sexy about a boy who knows his way around an instrument like Brett Dennen knows his way around a guitar. His voice is unique, but I never tire of it. I wish he looked like his voice. Does that make sense?
War Child and Invisible Children are organizations that are dedicated to making the world a better place by investing in the children that are affected by the horrors of war. Both were founded by filmmakers exposed to and exposing the traumatizing events that occur in areas with conflict. War Child is based in the UK, Canada and Holland and Invisible Children in the United States with a Europe tour coming up.
Explore their sites, donate, get involved and check out any events in your area. On Oct. 19th there will be a showing of "The Rescue" in the the UNM Student Union Building at 6.
Promo video for War Child UK that coincidentally features some fantastic artsits:
Think about this figure: According to UNICEF, in 2008 alone 10 million children were traumatized by war.
I can't remember the last time I was this stoked for a debut album.
I just bought Pixie Lott's Turn It Up and it has been WELL worth it. At the tender age of 18, Lott possesses vocal talent far beyond her years. Like Adele, Amy Winehouse, Duffy, and Natasha Beddingfield, Pixie seems to be mesmerized by the American soul era and it's evident in her music (including motown, as you can see in "Boys and Girls"). My concern, however, is that she'll be thrown carelessly into this category of British female artists. She's so distinctive and savvy, you just know this isn't the last you've heard of Pixie Lott.
Oh, and did I mention? She topped the UK charts this week with "Boys and Girls"! (At least on BBC's Radio 1, the Official UK Charts, however claim "Run This Town" took the top spot and "Boys and Girls" no where to be seen. I trust Radio 1.)
"Boys and Girls (Album Version)" - Pixie Lott
Also, out of the RIDICULOUS number of "Use Somebody" covers, Pixie's has to be my favorite. Not on the album, but again, well worth the listen :)
Just amazing. Sit back and allow this song to assault your ears. If Florence were to compose a symphony, this piece would be the overture AND climax. It's THAT big
"Drumming Song" - Florence + the Machine
Almighty sound, indeed.
Two awesome R&B tracks you should know about: Esmee Denters and LeToya. Denters is a Dutch singer who got her start on YouTube doing covers of Beyonce, Mariah Carey and the like. Justin Timberlake "discovered" her and brought her into Interscope. Although, her album has been released in the Netherlands, we may never get a release here in the states. So enjoy this:
"Outta Here" - Esmee Denters
LeToya Luckett, or just LeToya is one of the founding members of Destiny's Child, but let's be honest who really knows about anyone other than Beyonce, Michelle Williams and Kelly Rowland? In any case, she's out for blood with this new single, "She Ain't Got Shit on Me"
So I bought music from this band on iTunes which tells you two things:
1. I couldn't find it anywhere else, and 2. I really, really (really) liked it.
Oh, and you have to listen to it all the way through :D
And in case you missed the tweets (follow at www.twitter.com/MusicSequitur), Iron Man 2 comes out in May 2010 (!!) and Leona Lewis' new single "Happy" leaked this weekend and it's well worth a listen if you can find any sound bytes still standing.
Remi Nicole has caught a lot of flack for doing a couple of gigs with Amy Winehouse. But as the lady Nicole herself puts it, she is "no longer working as Amys friend, due to the credit crunch she had to let me go as she could no longer afford to employ me and so now i have taken the brave jump in to the world of music."
Check out this lovely single released this past week:
The new Boys Like Girls album Love Drunk includes a ballad featuring Taylor Swift.
Also, the Boys didn't include "Kill Me in a Record Shop" on the tracklist, which is a shame. Heavy Heart, the EP on which "Record Shop" was released, also included a fantastic cover of Frou Frou's "Let Go."
Oasis guitarist, Noel Gallagher quits Oasis and cancels a number of upcoming European tour dates. It sounds like some "verbal and violent intimidation" that "forced" his decision to quit came from his little bro, Liam, the band's frontman.
"All Around the World" - Oasis from (What's the Story) Morning Glory?
#20. David Guetta - One Love - Aug. 25 (US Release) David Guetta, the French producer/artist behind Black Eyed Peas' "I Gotta Feeling," has hit techno/dance gold. Collaborations with Akon and Kelly Rowland are the highlight of this album.
"When Love Takes Over" - David Guetta ft. Kelly Rowland
#19. Weezer - Raditude - Oct. 27 After their last release, The Red Album, you would think it's high time for Weezer to go back to their roots and end their stay in shallow, but catchy mainstream-dom. But even I'm not sure I want them to leave...
#18. Shakira - She Wolf - Oct. 5 I have to admit, I’m not a fan of the first single and title track, but I have faith – it’s Shakira!
“She Wolf” – Shakira
#17. The Swell Season - Strict Joy - Sept. 29 Irishman Glen Hansard and Czech-woman Marketa Irglova team up again after modest fame and recognition in 2007 when they won an academy award for their song "Falling Slowly" from Once.
"In These Arms" - The Swell Season
#16. Muse - The Resistance - Sept. 14 The talented trio are soon to release, their fifth studio album, which promises to be one of the best rock albums of 2009. Check out their first single, "Uprising"
#15. Brand New -Daisy - Sept. 22 The sophomore album from this quartet will (hopefully) be a great mellow-rock addition to their repertoire.
"Sowing Season" - Brand New (from their first album The Devil and God are Raging Inside Me)
#14. The Gossip - Music for Men - Oct. 6 (US release) I keep going back and forth on this group between whether I really like them, or think they're annoying. I think they're just a guilty pleasure.
"Love Long Distance" - The Gossip
#13. Jay Sean - All or Nothing You know when Lil' Wayne agrees to collaborate with you, you're on the fast track. Fore-going the usual Brit-pop techno "takeover", the British-Asian artist adopts the less chaotic US hip-hop style. This sounds convoluted. Just listen to "Down," his debut single.
#12. Boys Like Girls - Love Drunk - Sept. 8 I don't know if their first album was this tweenie and annoying and I've just grown out of it, or if Boys Like Girls has regressed in musical intellect, but the first single, "Love Drunk" gives me much, much less hope for this band. I'd love to see a great album from these guys.
"Love Drunk" - Boys Like Girls
BONUS (or not): “She’s Got a Boyfriend Now” – Boys Like Girls
#11. Colbie Caillat - Breakthrough - Aug. 25 "Falling for You," the first single is another one of my guilty pleasures. Similar to "Bubbly" and "Realize," this new album promises to mix a soul sound with pop.
"Falling for You" - Colbie Caillat
Top Ten …halfway there! #10. Lil' Wayne - Rebirth - Nov. 24 C'mon?! Who doesn't want to see Lil' Wayne take a stab at rock? “Prom Queen,” which was released back in January is supposedly the first single:
#9. Ingrid Michaelson - Everybody - Aug. 25 Yes, the ukulele queen is back with her most accessible album yet. I heard a story about an incident in the ER while she was in stirrups on the table because of ambiguous "feminine problems." The doc looks up at her face and asks, "Oh my god, are you Ingrid Michaelson?!" Go out and buy Everybody, out this week.
#8. Jay-Z - Blueprint III - Sept. 11 Jay-Z's ELEVENTH studio album, and the third of the Blueprint trilogy, is the hip hop event of the year. that is, unless Dr. Dre actually releases Detox (fat chance). I imagine he’s keen to put the disappointment that was Blueprint II behind him. "Run This Town" by Jay, Kanye and Rihanna is the first single off Blueprint after Rihanna turned it down for her album. Go find it on youtube :)
#7. Cartel - Cycles - Oct. 27 This seriously underrated band may actually hit the radio this time around. It'll be hard to out-do their classics "Lose It" and "Honestly," in my opinion.
"Let's Go" - Cartel
#6. The Summer Set - Love Like This - Oct. 17 Finally, the Summer Set will release their first full-length album! This band has been absolutely outstanding since the beginning when they covered "Love in This Club" (better than Usher). They have 3 EP's to their credit and they'll be touring with Cartel Oct. 22-Nov. 27. Also, Jess Bowen, the only girl, is one hell of a badass drummer.
"Chelsea Chelsea (demo)" - The Summer Set
Top Five …getting there! #5. - Arctic Monkeys - Humbug - Aug. 25 (US release) The UK phenomenon finally hits the US this week! Seemingly nonstop touring the past three years has spawned many of the new tunes on this LP, including the breakout hit "Crying Lightning." I'll always have a special place in my heart for Arctic Monkeys for giving those of us in the 505 a shout out, or at least, I like to think so.
"Five Oh Five (505)" - Arctic Monkeys from Favourite Worst Nightmare
#4. Gary Go - Gary Go - Sept. 15 Ok, ok so I really love "Wonderful," we all know this, but I really think Gary Go will go far (haha). Here's more from the man:
"Open Arms" - Gary Go
BONUS: Still awaiting an album announcement from these guys! "15 Minutes" - The Yeah You's
Top THREE …woohoo! #3. Pixie Lott - Turn it Up - Sept. 14 (UK release) Pixie, 18, is frequently referred to as "the new Adele," but I have to beg to differ. She's poppier, less soulful, but just as good. I believe (having trouble cross referencing) that she went to the same performing arts school as Adele. Maybe Pixie's a cross of Adele and Duffy? Nevertheless, check these two tracks out.
"Mama Do (Uh Oh, Uh Oh)" - Pixie Lott
"Boys & Girls" - Pixie Lott
#2. Wale - Attention: Deficit - Sept. 22 This D.C. rapper has a bright, bright future ahead of him. This is only the momentous beginning. He should move on from Lady Gaga, though.
"Chillin' " - Wale ft. Lady Gaga
Drumroll, please…
#1. Every Avenue - Picture Perfect - Nov. 2009 I start bouncing on the soles of my feet in excitement when I think about this album. The boys have gotten a taste of how to play the game of showbiz, and I have a feeling that this experience in conjunction with their already amazing material is going to be bombastic. Something to be stoked about.
